I was looking for an alternative to the windows task manager to see my cpu usage summarized in the system tray of my Windows 7 install. I quickly found the program “Core Temp” which provides various tray icon menus which provide at a glance summaries of the status of multiple pieces of hardware on the computer, including cpu load. The problem with Core Temp ;however, is that it installs a bunch of unwanted ad ware on your system, and in my experience does so regardless of whether or not you specify that it not do so in the installation options. Frustrated I uninstalled the program and the ad ware that it installed. After a bit more searching I found an open source project that did what I was looking for, that program was Open Hardware Monitor. While it is still in development, it is already powerful and quite stable, I have been using it to provide at a glance views of my computer’s CPU and RAM loads in the system tray. The application is written using Windows Forms, and does seem to be Mono compatible as I have managed to run it successfully in Linux, although it’s tray icons don’t render well in KDE, I have yet to try it in other Linux desktop environments. While I’m not sure I’d recommend it for use in Linux yet, it is a great tool for Windows. Check it out.
